Last night I finished the first serious painting that I have done in about 15 years. It began with a very limited pallette of yellows, greens and blues. When I started working on it, I was using some rather unconventional means, ie. paper towels, a Windex bottle, a wad of tissue paper from a new pair of shoes, etc.
The first photo I took of this piece shows a very, quickly and very poorly roughed face amid a greenish background. As I continued working on it, the pallette and the tools I used continued to evolve, as did the finished piece.
What I ended up with is an enormous departure from where I began, which is what I love about painting! The piece ultimately became a portrait of Mother Earth, floating in the deep, vast darkness of space.
The experience of working on this piece afforded me a great deal of time to consider my process. I realized, for example, that my fear of a blank canvas, (or foam core panel in this case), has been completely exorcized. The larger the surface, the better!
When I have time to organize my photos into albums and write more, I would like to post all of the photos that I have taken while working on this piece and do a companion blog describing my process along the way, (especially when I taped a rubber glove to a broom handle and used it as a brush)!
